Chicago Cubs Starting Rotation for 2011 Looks Ugly Right Now

August 19th, 2010

Unless Cubs GM Jim Hendry makes some significant moves this off season, the Cubs rotation for next year could be really bad.

In fact, the Cubs top starter looks to be Ryan Dempster, who would be a fourth or fifth starter on any other "contending" club.

Of course, that is assuming the Cubs will be contenders next season, an assumption that is not likely to be realized.

Even in an average rotation, one would have to look long and hard to find a worse number one than Dempster.

Dempster isn't bad, mind you, but he just isn't an ace despite being paid like one.

Meanwhile, how does a rotation of Dempster, Randy Wells, Carlos Zambrano, Carlos Silva and Tom Gorzelanny grab you?

Yeah, I thought so.

None of us know what to expect out of Zambrano. But if his current starts are any indication, he is not only a bad character, his velocity is down and he looks to be washed up at such a young age.

Plus, who is to say that Big Z will even be with the club next year? You know they would love to move him, only his outrageous contract and no-trade clause will prevent that from happening.

Wells is an enigma who is not blessed with enormous talent, so he has to have perfect control to be effective. I doubt he will ever be more than a fifth starter candidate.

Silva, meanwhile, is returning to the awful ways of his career. He is a bad pitcher who got off to an incredible start. Only his huge contract prevents the club from releasing his fat ass.

And Gorzelanny? Um, does he really do it for you? He shows flashes of being an acceptable fifth starter but there is no guarantee.

Since the Cubs have only one position available in which to upgrade their miserable offense (first base), don't expect the team to be able to deal with a lack of quality pitching.

Look, the bullpen, aside from Sean Marshall and Carlos Marmol, is basically nonexistent.

All this combines to create a gloomy forecast for 2011.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but things don't look good, fellow Cubs fans. And the rotation leads the way.

Royals RHP Meche to begin rehab Saturday (AP)

August 19th, 2010
Royals pitcher Gil Meche will begin a minor league rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Omaha. Meche, in the fourth season of a $55 million contract, is on the 60-day disabled list with a right shoulder injury. He opted not to have season-ending surgery, but to work out of the bullpen instead. After feeling good Thursday after a two-inning simulated game Wednesday, Meche got the approval to...

Boston Red Sox Reduce Signing Bonus As Aldaberto Ibarra Fails Physical

August 19th, 2010

Although the Boston Red Sox have finally signed Cuban catcher Aldaberto Ibarra to a minor league contract, a failed physical has significantly reduced the 22-year-old backstop's signing bonus, according to WEEI's Alex Speier.

As yet, there is no indication what aspect of the physical might have caused Boston to lower the signing bonus by more than two-thirds.

Originally set to snag more than $3 million when he put pen to paper, Ibarra has reportedly settled for between $700,000 and $800,000 after a minor medical problem left his physical examination coming up short.

Despite this medical road bump, the Red Sox didn't hesitate to sign the young Cuban, who defected to the United States only last year.

Widely considered by many Cuban baseball authorities to have the requisite skills which will help him thrive behind the big-league dish, Ibarra is known for a quick bat and a strong throwing arm. The latter skill has obvious attraction to the catching-weak Red Sox.

Brian Fuentes Should Remain a Los Angeles Angel

August 18th, 2010

In 2009, Brian Fuentes led the Major Leagues in saves with 48. Granted, they weren't all pretty and Angel fans still remember the fastball that Alex Rodriguez belted out of Yankee Stadium in the '09 ALCS; but overall Fuentes has been a solid closer for the Angels.

Just one season later, with the Angels at a mediocre 60-61, Fuentes has just 23 saves. He also has finished just 31 games in 2010. Fuentes contract includes a vesting option for 2011 if he finishes 55 games.

With just 41 games remaining, a lackluster offense and relievers setting him up who are not getting the job done it seems Fuentes is headed towards free agency. With an ERA presently at 3.22 and a WHIP of 1.16, plus being left handed he is likely to have quite a few suitors.

So in the offseason of 2011, not only will the Angels have to take a hard look at upgrading their core of set up men, they may also need a new closer. Those returning next season the Angels are going to have to right their ship or the 2011 club may have the same bullpen issues they do in 2010.

MLB: Washington Nationals Sign Top Overall Pick Bryce Harper

August 18th, 2010

The for the second year in a row, the Washington Nationals had the No. 1 overall pick in baseball’s June Draft, and for the second year in a row the Nationals signed that pick to a record setting deal.

Last year, the Nationals signed RHP Stephen Strasburg to a four-year, $15.1 million contract, which was the highest ever to a No.1 overall pick. This year, the Nationals signed No.1 overall pick Bryce Harper to a five-year, $9.9 million contract, which is the highest ever contract given to a position player in the draft.

The Nationals are handing out a lot of crispy lettuce to their No. 1 picks, but as they have seen with Strasburg in 2010, it’s worth the money. The only way the Nationals will be able to compete on a year in and year out basis is if they build through the draft, restocking their farm system, and signing guys like Strasburg, Harper, and Drew Storen (the other first round pick from last year) is a good start.

Like Strasburg, Harper is considered a once-in-a-lifetime talent and was clearly the best player in his draft. The Nationals drafted Harper as a catcher, but he will switch over to right field.

Switching Harper over to right field will get him to the majors and in a Nationals’ uniform in speedy fashion. I expect Harper to be in a Nationals’ uniform by 2012.
