Brett Gardner left Holly Hills, S.C., and showed up at the Yankees training facility in Tampa today.
One Yankee insider revealed that Joe Girardi had called hitting coach Kevin Long and ordered Long to be in Tampa tomorrow at 6:00 a.m. to begin working non-stop with Gardner until Spring Training opens.
Long was apparently threatened with his job if he does not work endlessly with Girardi's favorite player.
The insider (rumored by some to be George Costanza) indicated that Long was told by Girardi to work on nothing but bunting with Gardner. Even Girardi apparently recognizes that Gardner's best hope of reaching base is bunting.
On Monday, Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera are expected to be in camp to begin throwing live BP to Gardner to assist in his bunt work.
Girardi wanted to make certain that Pettitte was there because Gardner especially needs work against southpaw pitching.
Word was that C.C. Sabathia was contacted by Girardi for this special project and Sabathia laughed at Girardi over the telephone.
A rumor is floating that Girardi even contacted a spiritualist to see if there was any chance of conjuring contact through the ether world with Phil Rizzuto for additional tutoring on bunting.
The Scooter was well known as one of the better bunters in baseball history, and Girardi figured it was worth a chance of a seance, even if word got out.
